Natural Remedies for Shingles: Apple Cider Vinegar

This two methods will help reduce pain caused by shingles and stimulate recovery.

Method 1:

Soak a clean cloth rag in apple cider vinegar and cover the affected area with the damped rag. Place a hot water bottled or heating pad over the rag. Be careful not to burn the person.

Repeat this process regularly to provide relief to the itchy feeling and also reduce the recovery time.

Method 2:

Soak a clean rag in a mixture of apple cider vinegar, coconut oil and cayenne pepper and apply to the area in the same way as method 1 with heat.

Since apple cider vinegar has great antibacterial properties, you may also ingest apple cider vinegar to help with your immune system. Mix 1-2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar with an 8oz of warm water. Drink this three to four times per day.

Apple Cider Vinegar for Shingles Testimonial

Maxine — Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar cured my Shingles!

I wanted to write and give a testimonial for Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar. I broke out in Shingles two days before my birthday and OHHHHH, what misery. Anyway, I looked on the internet and found that there was nothing really that the doc could do for it, so I started looking for natural remedies. I found all kinds of things from hemorrhoid cream to vinegar. I only had some of the Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar in the cabinet, as I take it for indigestion, which works great by the way! So I decided that I would take the teaspoon in the morning and teaspoon at night instead of going and getting plain apple cider vinegar at the store. I also decided that I would up the dose from 1 teaspoon to 2 tablespoons morning and night, and to bath the shingle blisters with it. It was an instant comfort to the itching! And I could tell that it helped the pain for a while. After a week of taking Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar internally and bathing the shingles, they had dried up. All the info I had found on the internet said that it could take anywhere up to 60 days for them to dry up! I am so glad that I had it on hand. I did run out of the Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar and hubby went to Brookshire’s and got some of the regular apple cider vinegar… don’t recommend trying to drink that stuff!!!! YUCK!!! Hubby said I smelled like I hadn’t had a bath in a month, but I told him he’d have to just deal with it. LOL Hope no one has to use this remedy, but just know that it’s here to use it and IT DOES HELP!! (testimonial source)

What is Shingles & What Are the Symptoms

Typically the shingles rash occurs on one side of the body or the other. It may also appear on the face in a single stripe. Children can also contract shingles but it is often painless. People are more likely to get shingles as they age, and the disease tends to be more severe for the older.

At the onset of shingles, symptoms may include headache, fever, and a general feeling of discomfort. These symptoms are nonspecific and may result in an incorrect diagnosis. However, should shingles be the culprit, these symptoms are commonly followed by feelings of burning pain, itching, oversensitivity, or a tingling feeling.

Pain can be mild to extreme in the affected areas and include sensations often described as stinging, tingling, aching, numbing or throbbing. These sensations can also include quick stabs of pain.

The initial phase of shingles, usually lasting one to two days or up to 3 weeks, is followed by the appearance of a skin rash. The pain and rash most commonly show up on the torso, but can appear on the face, eyes or other parts of the body.

The first appearance of the rash can look like hives; however shingles will normally appear in a striped or belt-shaped pattern. Shingles is also limited to appearing on one side of the body and does not cross the middle.

Later the rash will begin to form small blisters filled with a pus-like fluid or ooze and you will often continue with a fever and general discomfort. The painful blisters will eventually become darkened as they fill with blood and crust over within seven to ten days. The crusts usually the fall off and the skin heals. However, after severe blistering, scarring and discolored skin may remain.

Usually the rash will heal within 2-4 weeks, however, some people may develop ongoing nerve pain lasting for a few month or even years. This condition is called postherpetic neuralgia. For those who have a weak immune system, the rash may be more wide spread. Also, if the rash involves the eye, vision loss may occur.

Apple Cider Vinegar Soothed Shingles Pain

Serious suffering may inspire creative experimentation. We are often impressed with the variety of remedies people use to ease shingles pain.

If you see a doctor early enough in a shingles attack, she can prescribe an antiviral drug such as acyclovir, famciclovir or valacyclovir. These oral medications can help reduce searing shingles pain, but they must be started within a few days of the start of the outbreak. Getting a prompt diagnosis of shingles can be trickier than it might seem.

We’ve heard of people using Listerine for shingles pain, but apple cider vinegar is an innovation we hadn’t encountered. Then we heard from this reader:

Q. When I had shingles, I applied apple cider vinegar to the rash. I thought it would burn, but within minutes it eased the itch and burning of the shingles.

Later my daughter had shingles and used the same remedy. The only downside was the vinegar smell.

A. A shingles attack can cause extreme pain. Prescription antiviral drugs (acyclovir, famciclovir, valaciclovir, etc) are always the first line of defense and can speed healing if used early enough.
Home Remedies for Shingles Pain:

Some people say that applying topical amber Listerine brings relief from shingles pain. Be cautious, though. One woman noted that a friend tried Listerine for her shingles and thought she was on fire. She suggested trying a very small area to determine if the remedy is helping or hurting. We would add the same caveat for vinegar.
